Grissom Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located in Peru, Indiana. It was originally established in 1942 as a training base for the B-17 Flying Fortress. The base was named after Lieutenant Colonel Virgil Ivan “Gus” Grissom, a native of Indiana and one of the original seven astronauts in NASA’s Mercury program.

Grissom AFB is home to the 434th Air Refueling Wing, which operates KC-135R Stratotanker aircraft to provide aerial refueling support to U.S. and allied forces around the world. The base also hosts the 305th Air Mobility Wing, which is responsible for providing global airlift, air refueling, and aeromedical evacuation capabilities.

In addition to its primary mission of air refueling and airlift support, Grissom AFB is also home to the Joint Incident Site Communications Capability (JISCC), which is a deployable communication system that provides secure and reliable voice, data, and video communications for first responders and military units during domestic and international emergencies and disasters.

The base covers an area of over 1.3 million acres and is located in the heart of the Midwest, making it an ideal location for training exercises and joint operations with other military units.
