On November 14, 1957, Apalachin became the center of attention when it hosted a meeting of organized crime bosses from around the country. The gathering, which later became known as the Apalachin Meeting, was intended to facilitate cooperation between different mafia families and to discuss various criminal activities.
The meeting was organized by Joseph Barbara, the boss of the Bufalino crime family, who lived in Apalachin. However, the gathering quickly attracted the attention of law enforcement when state troopers became suspicious of the large number of luxury cars arriving in the otherwise quiet town. As a result, they decided to investigate the situation and ended up raiding the meeting, arresting around 60 high-ranking mobsters.
